Case Study | Complete Online Water Quality Monitoring System of Chunye Instrument Put into Operation in Dongtai

Recently, Shanghai Chunye Instrument Technology has finished full-set equipment installation, pipeline layout and communication joint commissioning for an online water quality monitoring project in Dongtai. The complete COD and ammonia nitrogen monitors have been successfully deployed at a market in Dongtai, building a compliant and stable automatic sewage monitoring system for local pollutant-discharging enterprises. All equipment is fully compatible with the HJ212 pollution source online monitoring standard system, enabling seamless data upload to environmental supervision platforms.

I. Standardized On-Site Station Construction in Strict Compliance with Installation Specifications
The Dongtai project adopts standardized color steel plate monitoring sub-stations with an area of over 15 ㎡. An indoor constant-temperature air conditioning system maintains a stable temperature range of 5~28℃, fully matching the operating environment requirements of online water quality monitors.
Standard cabinet-type instruments (1470×500×400mm) are installed with reserved maintenance space in strict accordance with standards: ≥600mm clearance on both left and right sides of instruments, and ≥1000mm front operating space, facilitating reagent replacement, manual metering tube cleaning and fault maintenance in later operation.
Sampling pipelines are laid in compliance with norms: the distance between sampling points and instruments is controlled within 50 meters, all pipelines adopt corrosion-resistant rigid PVC pipes with a downhill layout to eliminate water accumulation dead zones. Submersible pumps fitted with double-layer stainless steel filter screens filter impurities in water to prevent air bubbles and particulate matter from interfering with the detection accuracy of the potassium dichromate method for COD and salicylic acid spectrophotometry for ammonia nitrogen. Overflow pipes and drain pipes are arranged in separate branches to avoid equipment alarms caused by abnormal water pressure. Waste liquid is collected uniformly and treated in accordance with hazardous waste disposal standards.

II. Dual Equipment Matching of COD & Ammonia Nitrogen to Build a Complete Online Monitoring System

The project is equipped with two core devices: online automatic COD monitor and online ammonia nitrogen water quality monitor, together with a data acquisition and transmission instrument to form a complete HJ212 pollution source online monitoring system, covering the monitoring of two core pollutant indicators of enterprise sewage.
✅ COD Monitor: Adopts potassium dichromate spectrophotometry with customizable segmented measuring ranges, supporting stable detection of high-concentration wastewater and built-in chloride ion masking function.
✅ Ammonia Nitrogen Monitor: Adopts salicylic acid spectrophotometry with low detection limit and excellent repeatability, applicable to various types of industrial wastewater.
Both instruments are equipped with 12-way selector valves and micro photoelectric metering components, featuring low reagent consumption with a maintenance cycle longer than one month. They support automatic calibration, standard sample verification and 5-year local data storage without data loss during power outages.
Integrated electrical and communication construction: Stable AC220V power supply with multiple reserved power sockets; voltage stabilizers can be matched for areas with voltage fluctuations. The equipment is equipped with dual RS232/RS485 communication interfaces, compatible with both Modbus RTU and HJ212-2017 protocols, supporting dual transmission modes of wired network and 4G wireless. Real-time data including COD concentration (code w01018), ammonia nitrogen concentration (code w21003), equipment operating status, calibration records and over-limit alarm information are uploaded to environmental supervision platforms continuously.

III. Full-Process Commissioning, Calibration & On-Site Operation Training for Handover

After installation, professional technicians of Chunye completed the full set of equipment commissioning procedures:
  1. Fill pipelines with liquid, initialize instruments and exhaust air inside pipelines;

  2. Configure zero-point and standard mother liquor to complete two-point calibration (zero point + 80% full-scale standard solution);

  3. Launch standard sample verification and lock the standard curve after the equipment deviation meets the standard;

  4. Manually debug peristaltic pumps, heating digestion units, cooling fans and sampling pumps to troubleshoot common faults such as pipeline blockage, liquid suction failure and thermocouple abnormality.

After commissioning, technicians provided on-site training for the plant’s operation and maintenance staff, covering practical operation and maintenance knowledge: preparation and replacement cycle of COD masking agent & oxidant, ammonia nitrogen A/B/C reagents, manual cleaning of metering tubes, touch screen hierarchical password management (Administrator: 2008 / Maintenance Staff: 2010), abnormal fault reset and other operations, reducing the enterprise’s later labor cost.
